Parks Getting Salary From Campaign Contributions

State Representative Marvin Parks says his
full-time effort at running for Congress merits a salary, so he`s
paying himself four-thousand dollars per month from contributions
to his campaign.
Parks, a Republican from Greenbrier, is running for his party`s
nomination in the May 18the primary. He hopes to challenge
Democratic incumbent Second District Congressman Vic Snyder.
Parks is a former junior high school math teacher. Aside from
his post in the state House, he doesn`t work. He and his wife have
seven children, and Parks says the salary will help pay his bills.
So far, Parks has raised more 200-thousand dollars for his
campaign.
It is legal for Parks to pay himself because he is a challenger
-- an incumbent can`t do so.
Also running in the Republican primary is Ed Garner, a Maumelle
bakery owner. Garner says he`s not paying himself. Snyder says he
hasn`t paid himself either.
