A small blotch on the back of the neck may be a precursor to type 2 diabetes, according to a Little Rock Health Professor.
Thea Spatz, an adjunct professor at UALR, studied obese children ranging in age from 4-11 over a four-year period. Most of them had Acanthosis Nigricans, a blotchy patch on their skin, usually found on the neck.
"It`s a red flag," says Spatz. "That`s just means if you keep doing what you`re doing, you`ll eventually develop into type 2 diabetes."
Spatz says this mark is just part of a disturbing national trend of childhood obesity. She recommends parents monitor their children`s diet and have them take part in at least one hour of daily exercise.
13 percent of American children are obese.
