Attorney General warns ephedra sales to become illegal

Updated: January 7, 2009
Arkansas Attorney General Mike Beebe warned today that it will become illegal to sell dietary supplements with ephedrine starting April Twelfth. The popular sports supplement ephedra is already considered dangerous by health officials, but Beebe said he wants to emphasize that it will also be illegal soon. He reminded consumers of the hazards of taking the herbal stimulant, like heart attack, stroke, seizures and death. It has been linked to at least 155 deaths, including Baltimore Orioles pitcher Steve Bechler last spring. Ephedra has been promoted recently as a natural way to lose weight, enhance sports performance and increase energy. But the Federal Drug Administration reviewed its side-effects and instituted the ban. Ephedra remains readily available from vitamin brokers on the Internet.
