Former Arkansas Chief Justice Dies

Former Arkansas Supreme Court Chief Justice John A. Fogleman, known for his influence on state case law, died Wednesday at his home. He was 92. Fogleman, a Marion native who spent 70 years in the legal profession, became an associate justice on the state Supreme Court in 1976. In 1981, then-Governor Bill Clinton appointed Fogleman as chief justice. He retired from the high court a year later and taught law at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock while continue to practice law in Little Rock. Fogleman also served for a time as president of the Arkansas Bar Association. During his tenure on the bench, he wrote over 1,000 opinions. In 1977, Fogleman wrote the majority opinion on a case that found the state`s death penalty constitutional.
