Youth Suicide-Growing problem in Arkansas

By: Import User
Updated: January 7, 2009
This is youth suicide awareness week in Arkansas. And if you think this is a problem somewhere else, not here, think again. The Jason Foundation, a group dedicated to preventing teen suicide, estimates that one out of every 11 Arkansans ages 15-24 have attempted suicide in the last year. That slightly more than the national average. For all ages, there were 49 suicides in Pulaski county last year. The Jason foundation also finds the victims are who many would consider successful teenagers such as athletes or those with good grades. Experts suspect the increased pressure on the younger generation may be to blame for tripling the suicide rate over the last 40 years.
