Democrats in Arkansas` congressional
delegation say an amendment banning gay marriages is unnecessary
because federal and state law protect the sanctity of marriage.
But Representative John Boozman, a Republican, says he supports
President Bush`s proposed constitutional change.
Bush said today an amendment is needed to block judges from
changing the definition of the "most enduring human institution."
Senator Blanche Lincoln says family law matters historically
have been governed by state law -- and in Arkansas, that means
marriage is a union between a man and a woman.
Lincoln says she also supports federal law that prohibits
federal recognition of same-sex marriages and permits individual
states to refuse to recognize gay marriages performed in other
states.
Boozman, the only Republican in Arkansas` congressional
delegation, said he believes in the traditional definition of
marriage and has co-sponsored legislation for a constitutional
amendment to protect it.
