A man free from prison for almost five months
thanks to a clerical error is back in police custody.
Fred McCoy turned himself in to Pine Bluff police this
afternoon. Pine Bluff police spokesman Bob Rawlinson says McCoy`s
paperwork is being processed so that he can begin serving his
36-month prison sentence for domestic battery.
McCoy was accidentally released instead of being transferred in
September. The state Correction Department didn`t realize McCoy was
missing until a reporter asked about his whereabouts two days ago.
Department spokesman Dina (DYE-nah) Tyler blamed the mistake on
an overloaded prison system.
McCoy had been transferred from state prison to the Jefferson
County jail to a facility in nearby Sheridan before falling through
the cracks.
