Tyson Foods To Remove Trans Fats

By: Import User
Updated: January 7, 2009
Springdale-based Tyson Foods says it will remove trans fats -- a form of fat believed to be particularly harmful -- from its fully cooked retail products. The company also said trans fats would be eliminated from "child nutrition" labeled school food-service products. The company says the trans fats will be removed over the next three months from Tyson-brand breaded chicken products, such as nuggets, patties and tenders. The new products will reach store shelves in the spring and early summer. In July, the federal Food and Drug Administration adopted a new rule that will require trans fat content to be listed on food labels containing trans fat. The rule will not become effective, however, until 2006, to allow food processors to use up current stocks and to avoid high costs to manufacturers from a sudden requirement for massive relabeling.
