Legislative Duty Tough To Juggle For One Lawmaker

By: Import User
Updated: January 7, 2009
State Representative Jeremy Hutchinson says juggling law school with his legislative obligations have made it difficult for him to fully participate in a special session on education reform. So he has had colleagues cast several votes on his behalf. Hutchinson says as the votes have come up, he has e-mailed or phoned colleagues and told them whether to push the Yes or No button on his voting machine. Hutchinson says he never expected the session to last eight weeks, and is afraid to miss too many classes at law school. Hutchinson defended the practice of having others cast votes on a legislators` behalf, saying it was commonplace. Another legislator with similar responsibilities is Representative Jeff Wood, who graduated from law school in December and is studying for the bar exam. He also is in the National Guard and faces possible deployment to Iraq. Wood says he took his law classes at night so he could attend all legislative meetings. Posted by Mike Hellgren
