The Skinny On Slimming Down A Police Department

By: Import User
Updated: January 7, 2009
When Randall Aragon isn`t running 20 miles a week, he serves as the chief of the Conway Police Department. He doesn`t fit the stereotype but he knows it all too well: overweight officers spending more time at the donut shop than out on patrols. In addition to fighting crime, Conway is now looking to fight the battle of the bulge. Conway officers are required to complete a physical test (9 pushups, 28 situps and a 1 1/2 mile run in 18:18); if they fail, they can lose their jobs. Arragon says keeping fit will cut down on lawsuits, on-the-job injuries and other health risks. Police departments in Little Rock and North Little Rock also test their officers every year. The difference: if their officers fail, their jobs are not in jeopardy.
