SBC Communications says it will close a
customer service call center in June and give its 30 workers the
option of moving within the company or quitting.
Company spokesman Walt Sharp say the moves are necessary as
SBC brings better technology to its call centers.
Call centers deal primarily with customer service issues,
ranging from billing to technical problems. Sharp says the
Jonesboro central office will remain open.
Little Rock is the closest call center location to Jonesboro in
Arkansas. SBC expects to cut between three- and four-thousand
employees nationwide as a means of cutting costs and beefing up the
call centers that will remain in operation.
The San Antonio-based communications giant has about 1,800
Arkansas employees, including those in the Jonesboro call center.
