The state`s environmental chief is declaring an
emergency in Faulker County because polluted runoff water remains
in a ditch near a Conway chemical plant that burned.
But officials say the water is dammed off and did NOT get into a
creek that flows into Lake Conway. The Detco Industries plant
burned after an explosion yesterday.
Marcus Devine, director of the Arkansas Department of
Environmental Quality, is ordering the company to hire a contractor
to clean up the water this week. If Detco does not comply, Devine
says the state could do the job and seek reimbursement.
Meanwhile, federal officials say environmental contamination
from the explosion and fire apparently did NOT reach levels high
enough to pose a serious health threat to the public.
