Updated: January 7, 2009
After 24 years of controversy and court appeals, convicted murderer Charles Singleton was executed Tuesday night at the Cummins Unit near Varner. Singleton was convicted of killing Mary Lou York, 62, of Hamburg in 1979. Singleton`s case attracted international attention because of his mental status. The case was heard by the nation`s highest courts, but in the end, Singleton`s attorney says his client had grown tired of the appeals process and was ready to die. The victim`s family was not on hand to offer comments following Singleton`s execution, but in earlier interviews, Charles York, the victim`s son, had expressed his desire to see Singleton die for his crime.
