Last Minute Stay Of Execution Granted For Roberts

Updated: January 7, 2009
Convicted murderer Karl Roberts, scheduled to die tonight by lethal injection, has won a last-minute stay of execution from a federal judge. A spokesman for the Attorney General`s office says the state is filing a motion to lift the stay of execution with the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals. Roberts had not yet taken his case to federal court. His lawyer, Craig Lambert, made the motion five hours before a scheduled double execution. Lambert did not immediately return calls for comment. The stay was granted to Roberts by US District Judge George Howard Junior in Little Rock. Attorney General Mike Beebe`s office filed papers opposing Roberts` request and asked that the execution go forward. Roberts was scheduled to die as part of a double-execution, receiving a lethal injection after Charles Singleton.
