First Woman Sworn In As Chief Justice

Updated: January 7, 2009
Betty Dickey will be in office only about a year but she`ll always be the first woman to have served as Arkansas chief justice. Dickey was sworn in yesterday. She says that she wants to be a role model and that she should inspire young mothers to have faith in the value of education and hard work. The 63-year-old Dickey replaces former Chief Justice W-H "Dub" Arnold, who retired on January first 1 with five years left in his term. Dickey, a former prosecutor, will serve on the state Supreme Court through the November election, when someone else will be elected to complete the last four years of Arnold`s term. She is ineligible to run for the remainder of his court term. Justice Tom Glaze swore in Dickey in a packed state Supreme Court chamber. Her two sons looked on and her daughter, Rachel Dickey, held the Bible during the oath.
