Truckers Brace For New Regulations

By: Import User
Updated: January 7, 2009
A lobbyist for Arkansas trucking firms says new limits on hours truckers can spend behind the wheel could lead to higher retail prices. New federal rules go into effect Sunday. The regulations are intended to reduce accidents involving big rigs and will restrict the number of hours truckers can drive between rest periods. But Arkansas Trucking Association president Lane Kidd says the rules will make it more expensive for trucking companies to operate. Kidd says he expects a loss in productivity, which could drive up rates carriers charge shippers. Those increases would likely be passed on to consumers.
