COURT DEADLINE LOOMS OVER STATE CAPITOL

Updated: January 7, 2009
January first of 2004 is the deadline for state lawmakers to come up with a new funding formula for public education. The state supreme court ruled the state must provide all public school students with an equal and adequate education and funding must be distributed fairly. Members of the senate passed a stop gap measure. Senate bill 43 would add an additional 16 million dollars to school districts. Under the formula- districts would receive money based on the number of students receiving free or reduced lunches. This applies to pre-k through first grade. It`s a temporary measure that runs from January first through June 31st- but it would satisfy the court order. The measure will now go to the house. If passed- lawmakers will then decide on a permanent funding formula to begin July first.
