breaking news
The body of a man who died while being booked
into jail was exhumed today.
Shortly afterward, a crowd of about 300 marched on Nashville
city hall and confronted the police chief about that case and
others. The remains of 29-year-old Larry "Nicky" Hill will
undergo two independent autopsies.
The N-Double-A-C-P Arkansas State Conference claims that Hill
and up to 11 other blacks have died in police custody in Howard
County over the past decade; officials put the total at four and
say officers did nothing to prompt Hill`s death.
Hill died September 13th after running from officers who tried
to arrest him for drunken driving. He was subdued by Nashville
police officer Steve Dallas, who used pepper spray, and a deputy
whose hand was broken in the scuffle.
Police say Hill was in the booking room of the jail when he
began having trouble breathing and collapsed; he was taken to
Howard Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead that
evening.
