Ethics Commission Looks At State Treasurer

Updated: January 7, 2009
A second complaint against state Treasurer Gus Wingfield filed with the state Ethics Commission questions whether he broke the law in hiring, promoting and raising the pay of two daughters. Also questioned in the complaint filed by a Maumelle woman were the reassignment and later dismissal of a woman who once held a post in Wingfield`s office now occupied by one of his daughters. A letter dated Tuesday by Ethics Commission director Graham Sloan said the agency would investigate whether Wingfield violated two state laws with his actions. One law at issue bars hiring anybody to a state job in return for election assistance, and the other bars a public official from using the office to secure special privileges for a child. The complaint was filed by Kimberly Barnett of Maumelle. In November, Karen Aymond of Fordyce filed a complaint with the commission claiming that Wingfield`s decision to raise the pay of one of his daughters by 30 percent was unethical.
