Updated: January 7, 2009
A father and his 18-year-old son drowned in a concrete pit at a cotton gin at Eudora after the father jumped in to try to save the teenager. Police identified the victims in the Monday night accident as Eugene Weston Junior and 42-year-old Eugene Weston Senior. Both are from Eudora. Investigators say the younger Weston and his cousin, 20-year-old Lynn Jones, were near the cotton gin across from the Weston home when the younger Weston fell into the pit. The hole had eight feet of water and its walls reached 13 feet. Police said the two may have been trying to drown a dog when the incident occurred. The father jumped in to rescue his son, and officials say both drowned. The gin was being dismantled.
