Despite Questions, Jefferson County Creates Board To Help Youth

The Jefferson County Quorum Court voted last night to establish a county Board on Children and Youth, despite some questions over its scope and legality. The ordinance will create a 13-member board to oversee and evaluate the county`s intervention and prevention programs for children. It passed over objections from Justice of the Peace Vannette Johnson, who felt that such a board violated state law that only allows counties to establish advisory or administrative boards. Johnson was the only justice to vote against it. County Judge Jack Jones said he believes the board is illegal. But the bill`s sponsor, Justice of the Peace Edward Spears, said county attorney Rob Wyatt had read the ordinance and confirmed its legality. Spears said he hopes to have the board meeting early in 2004. Posted by Mike Hellgren
