Consumer Alert: Holiday Gift Cards

By: Import User
Updated: January 7, 2009
State attorney general Mike Beebe said today that Arkansans should be cautious when purchasing gift cards for holiday gifts this year. Beebe said many retailers are doing away with paper gift certificates and instead issuing plastic gift cards. He said the cards are easier to track and more difficult to counterfeit, but that they often come with more complicated terms. Beebe said some cards carry expiration dates or maintenance fees that let retailers reduce their value if they go unused for a period of time. He suggested that shoppers ask if there is a processing or montly usage fee and check if there is a fee to close out the card. Posted by Mike Hellgren
