Governor Huckabee has named Betty Dickey as the new Arkansas chief justice. Dickey will become the first woman in Arkansas history to serve as chief justice. W-H "Dub" Arnold announced Monday that he would resign the post effective January first. Dickey will serve through the end of next year. A new chief justice will be elected in the November 2004 general election to serve out the four years remaining on Arnold`s term. The 63-year-old Dickey is a former Jefferson County employee and is a former Huckabee appointee to the state Public Service Commission. Dickey, a Republican, has also run unsuccessfully for state attorney general. She lost to Democrat Mark Pryor. Dickey presently serves as Huckabee`s legal counsel. She lives in Little Rock and grew up in Lawrence County.
