Education Funding Overhaul

The state Education Department on Tuesday
released three versions of a public school funding formula for the
2004-2005 school year.
The Education Department used 2002-03 enrollment data in
determining how much state aid each district should receive for the
next school year. Using that data, this table shows the average
amount to be spent per student under three plans.
The table shows district name and enrollment in 2002-03.
Dollar figures show average per-pupil spending under a plan by
Gov. Mike Huckabee that has school staff levels mandated by the
state, estimates that include the Huckabee plan and elements of the
current formula (which includes more money for poorer districts,
special student needs and is backed by many superintendents) and
funding levels recommended by a team of consultants who studied
Arkansas` public education system last summer.
The table is ranked by the Huckabee figures. The governor is
expected to call legislators into a special session next Monday.
