The lost art of Lay-a-Way

At one Walmart location there is over 600 thousand dollars worth of merchandise stored in the layaway department. Yet despite the popularity of 10 percent down now, pay the rest by the 15th, few stores offer the service anymore. "I wish alot more stores would offer it," says holiday shopper Tammy Koon, "it`s alot easier. You don`t have to pay so much at one time. The practice is almost impossible to find in the mall, where Tammy was shopping. Most department stores did away with its layaway program in the early 1980`s. Target says it does not offer layaway because it wants its customers to realize the value of their in-store credit card. Wal-mart says it realizes that a large percentage of its customers do not have credit cards. It plans on continuing the practice for many more years.
