A judge from another community will likely
have to rule on whether Pulaski County Clerk Carolyn Staley should
be thrown out of office.
Circuit Judge John Langston has recused from conducting a
hearing on a grand jury recommendation that Staley be removed due
to her failure to straighten out massive problems with voting
lists.
Langston says the judges in Pulaski County have a close working
relationship with Staley and thus should not rule in her case, to
avoid the appearance of a lack of impartiality.
Prosecuting Attorney Larry Jegley filed a motion after the
recusal Wednesday asking that the county`s 16 other judges do the
same. It is up to each judge, but several said yesterday they plan
to recuse.
Proceedings to remove Staley from office began November 13th
when a special grand jury concluded that Staley had failed in her
duty to keep an accurate voter-registration list.
