The state`s duck season opens this weekend and
farmers across the Delta are flooding their fields with the hope of
attracting ducks. Hunters pay farmers for access to their fields,
making duck season something of a second cash crop for growers.
Dow Brantley emptied millions of gallons of water into his
fields this week near England. Brantley says the income from
hunters has helped farmers get through tough economic times.
Brantley`s family has farmed in the area since 1946, but only
started flooding to attract duck hunters three years ago. The
Brantley farm is just 18 miles from Stuttgart, the self-proclaimed
"Rice and Duck Capital of the World."
Duck hunting brings in one million dollars a day to the region during hunting season.
