Senator Lincoln Has First Official Republican Opponent

A first-term Republican state senator from northwest Arkansas plans to run for the U-S Senate next year. State Senator Jim Holt of Springdale says he will attempt to unseat U-S Senator Blanche Lincoln, a Democrat, in 2004. Holt, age 38, served one term in the state House before his election to the Senate in 2002. He is the first Republican to announce intentions to challenge Lincoln, although former Benton County Sheriff Andy Lee has said he is considering the race and Tom Formicola of Little Rock, a medical supply company manager, has filed papers with the Federal Election Commission to form an exploratory committee.
