Arkansas Trying To Meet Recycling Goal

By: Import User
Updated: January 7, 2009
A new report says Arkansans recycled 34 percent of solid waste from households and businesses last year. And the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality says the state is on track to meet its target of 40 percent recycling by 2005. Department director Marcus Devine says a study by ADEQ shows that 1.4 million tons of waste were recycled in the state last year. But the amount of trash generated is also on the increase. The state had more than 4 million tons of solid waste in 2002, up from 3.6 million tons the year before. Businesses and individuals continue to pay the costs of maintaining landfills to take in the waste. The report says recycling saved more than 40 million dollars in landfill disposal costs last year.
