Officials in Conway are moving toward building a
new airport south of the city to better corporate jets. An
industrial park would be nearby.
An environmental impact study is complete, and the Conway
Development Corporation has purchased about seven-hundred acres in
the Lottie Bottoms area.
The current airport in the city has a 4,800 foot
runway and the surrounding area has little room for expansion.
The proposal for a new airport calls for a first phase that will
cost between ten and twelve million dollars. It would have a
5,500 foot runway that could be extended to
seven-thousand feet.
There is some opposition from the current airport`s operators.
Manager Bill Cope says the new site is too close to the Arkansas
River, which will cause problems with fog. He says it would be
cheaper to expand the existing airport.
