Former POW`s Remember Their Own Stories

Now that the six American soldiers captured by the Iraqis are all safe at home, the story for one of them, Private Jessica Lynch continues to unfold. And former Prisoners of War from World War II say that their experience 60 years ago was quite different. Captured by the Germans in 1944 and 1945, they say they were sent to prison camps along with hundreds and even thousands of other soldiers. Former POW Stanley Rames says he was marched mroe than 60 miles to another camp in the cold and sometimes the snow. He says they never suffered much abuse from the Germans but the worst part was the constant hunger. John Golden says during the month that he was in a prison camp, almost everyone was sick, many with dysentery. But doesn`t recall anyone ever being treated in a hospital, like some of the prisoners taken in Iraq. "Unless you had a broken bone, why, they set the bone and put you back in your prison, period. You didn`t stay in any hospital for anything," said John Golden. But it was Private Jessica Lynch`s capture and then rescue from an Iraqi hospital that Rames believes was exploited. "My first thoughts were the government was making a big deal out of it, to make people sympathetic towards the war," said Stanley Rames.
