Fallout From One Tax Election

By: Import User
Updated: January 7, 2009
The day after Carroll County voters rejected a tax increase, County Judge Ed Robertson said he`ll ask the quorum court to close the courthouses in Berryville and Eureka Springs on Fridays next year to reduce expenses. Robertson`s plan would possibly mean layoffs or pay cuts as county officials try to address the county`s budget crisis. Nearly 65 percent who cast ballots Tuesday voted against the one cent sales tax increase. The tax proceeds would have provided about one-point-six (m) million dollars annually for the county`s general fund. Without the revenues, Robertson says, the county should consider reducing expenses by going to a four-day work week for government offices. Under his plan, the sheriff`s office would still be open on Fridays, however. Posted by Mike Hellgren
