Deputies Say Man Gave Life To Save Others

A man whose truck caught fire soon after he filled it with gasoline is being hailed as a hero after driving the truck away rather than let it explode near the fuel pumps. Fifty-six-year-old Johnny Pope was killed when the truck blew up yesterday afternoon in a gravel parking lot about 50 feet away from the C-and-H Gas and Grocery near Royal in Garland County. Sheriff Larry Sanders says Pope was thinking about the safety of others and likely saved lives. The cause of the fire was not known, Sanders said. There didn`t appear to be anything wrong with the gas pump Pope used.
