911, 411, And Now 311?

Major cities like New York and Chicago are already using a 311 phone system, now residents in Little Rock will have the chance to vote on one for themselves. For non-emergency calls like a stolen wallet or an abandoned car, people would dial 311 instead of 911. The Little Rock 911 Police and Fire Dispatch Center says almost half of their calls are for such non-emergencies. "It also increased the time in which we can get to the 911 calls. Certainly the 911 calls take priorty over non-emergency," said communications director Laura Martin. The 311 system is third on Tuesday`s ballot along with upgrading warning sirens and police and fire radio equipment. The total cost for all of them is $11,865,000.
