The prosecutor in the Missouri murder trial of a paroled Arkansas rapist outlined for the jury today a picture of methodical killer who took care to leave no evidence in a Kansas City apartment. Wayne DuMond is on trial for the September 20th, 2000, killing of 39-year-old Carol Sue Shields. The hotel manager from Parkville was found suffocated in a friend`s Clay County apartment less than ten miles from DuMond`s home. Prosecutors say they have DNA evidence from under the victim`s fingernails. Clay County Prosecutor Shane Alexander told the jury today he would call about 35 witnesses. DuMond`s public defenders did not present an opening statement. ------ The 54-year-old DuMond is charged with first-degree murder. He moved to Smithville, Missouri, less than two months before the killing, following his release on parole in Arkansas where he had been serving a sentence for rape. DuMond was convicted in the 1984 rape of a Forrest City teenager who is a distant cousin of Bill Clinton, then Arkansas` governor. While awaiting trial in that case, he said he was castrated by masked men who broke into his home. DuMond was sentenced to life plus 20 years for the rape. But the sentence later was commuted in 1992 to 39 and one half years. He was released in 1999 and, now married, moved in August 2000 to Smithville with his new wife. He lived there until his arrest on June 22nd, 2001.
