High schools in districts with fewer than
500 students would be consolidated under a compromise school-reform
bill Senate members are considering.
Senate members say the proposal would probably NOT allow schools
under the minimum enrollment level to remain as they are, even if
they meet standards.
The plans is a compromise with Governor Huckabee`s proposal,
which targets high schools with fewer than 425 students for
possible consolidation if the schools cannot meet academic
standards in an economically efficient way.
The goal of consolidation is to reduce the number of small high
schools in the state. It can be accomplished by setting a minimum
high school size or, alternatively, a minimum size for whole school
districts.
Senator Brenda Gullett says she supports a 500-student minimum,
which would affect about 99 school districts.
