Family Sues Gas Company

Updated: January 7, 2009
-- Relatives of a Lamar couple who died in a house fire three years ago are suing a gas company in federal court. The lawsuit alleges the gas company was negligent, leading to the November 2000 fire. The suit seeks more than 400 thousand dollars in damages. The fire killed 73-year-old Wanda Callaham. Relatives who lived nearby pulled her husband, Roy Callaham, from the burning house but he died the following July of injuries suffered in the blaze. Neighbors told authorities they heard an explosion prior to noticing the fire. The lawsuit contends that Reliant Energy Arkla failed to properly maintain its natural gas transportation line system and skirted safety procedures in violation of state law. Posted by Mike Hellgren
