When to Chase: Little Rock`s Pursuit Policy

With an average of one high-speed chase a week, Little Rock Police spend a lot of time teaching recruits when and how to chase suspects. Here are some of the basics: officers need to take weather and traffic conditions into account before making a decision. Then, once the decision is made, a supervisor needs to monitor the chase. That supervisor can call the chase off at anytime. Most chases are usually limited to only two marked police vehicles. Police say safety comes first, even if that means the suspect gets away. The suspects in yesterday`s two chases (involving a handful of law enforcement agencies from central Arkansas) were caught, arrested and sustained no injuries.
