Republicans Struggle To Get Ready For Next Year

The Arkansas Republican Party heads into next year`s general elections with a state office that`s in disarray. But some analysts say there`s enough time to get over the problems without their affecting the party`s effort next year.
Last week, the party eliminated four jobs -- including that of executive director -- because it couldn`t afford the salaries.
Art English, a political science professor at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, said the problems would have been worse two or three months down the line. But he said he thinks party officials realize they have an absence of leadership that will have to be dealt with quickly. He speculated that the problems could lower morale for G-O-P stalwarts.
Peggy Scranton, also a professor of political science at U-A-L-R, agreed that the key to the state party`s recovery would be acting quickly. But she said Scranton said voters probably will overlook the party`s internal turmoil. She said the average voter`s
eyes tend to glaze over when such matters come up.
