Tell Little Rock Officials What You Think of Tax Hike

Now that the Little Rock board of directors is considering a raise of the city's current half-cent sales tax to a 1.25 cent sales tax, it wants to know how citizens feel about it.

Public hearings will be held this month to discuss costs of the city's priority needs.

Times and places are as follows:

Monday, June 13, 6:00 p.m. - Northwest Police Sub-Station, 1001 Kanis Road

Tuesday, June 14, 7:00 p.m. - Southwest Community Center, 6401 Baseline Road

Wednesday, June 15, 6:00 p.m. - Fulbright Elementary School, 300 Pleasant Valley Dr.

Wednesday, June 22, 6:00 p.m. - Dunbar Community Center, 1001 West 16th Street

Thursday, June 23, 6:00 p.m. - Pulaski Heights Presbyterian, 4401 Woodlawn Dr.

Saturday, June 25, 10:00 a.m. - Hinton Resource Center, 3805 West 12th Street

More public hearings will be set up and announced by the end of next week.

The newly proposed 1.25 cent tax would be a combination of two different taxes. One portion, 1/2 cent would go toward capital projects, such as building a new police station. That tax would only last for eight years.

Another permanent 3/4 cent tax would go toward the annual budget. Voters would need to vote on each separately, but the board acknowledges they'd need both taxes in order for them to work.

City leaders received a list of priorities for the new revenue, based on the city's four main priorities: public safety, economic development, public works and parks.
