Unique Competitor Wows Fair Judges

By: Import User
Updated: January 7, 2009
One young competitor at this year`s fair had to overcome much more than the stubbornness of an animal to get her shot in front of the judges. Already diagnosed with a rare autoimmune deficiency disorder, Jessica Whitfield developed lymphoma in April. Though the teen`s been weak and in treatment, she didn`t lose sight of her goal to compete in her first state fair. Her mom says watching her daughters struggle has been inspiring. "Some people don`t think you can learn things from younger people. I believe you can... Don`t ever give up always have faith," adds Flora Whitfield, Jessicas mother. So far this fair, Jessica has won prizes for her baking, coming up with pork recipes, sewing and woodworking. But, her biggest victory came 4 days before the fair...when she found out her lymphoma is in remission.
