Wal-Mart And Confederate Statue On One City`s Logo Stirring Controversy

A logo being designed for a group that promotes Bentonville may have to avoid depicting the city`s two most recognized features -- a Confederate statue and the Wal-Mart Visitors Center. Main Street Bentonville board member Tom McCoy says Wal-Mart would object to its image being coupled with a Confederate symbol. Sam Walton`s first store, locally known as the Five and Dime, is now the Visitors Center for Bentonville-based Wal-Mart, the world`s largest retailer. It faces the city square of downtown Bentonville, dominated by a sculpture of a Confederate soldier modeled after the 14th Governor of Arkansas, James H. Berry. One alternative for the logo is to replace the visitors center with the local courthouse. Posted by Mike Hellgren
