Christmas Could Be Dimmer At The Capitol

Updated: January 7, 2009
Secretary of State Charlie Daniels is planning a less grand, more traditional Christmas display at the state Capitol this yuletide season. Gone will be the elaborate lighting display that millionaire businessman Jennings Osborne provided for years. But Daniels` chief deputy says the Capitol will be lit for Christmas, possibly with help from state businesses or individuals. Peggy Gram says there will NOT be a giant tree shipped in and lit on the Capitol lawn, or 75 smaller trees planted along the east front walk and left to the individual counties to decorate. The changes will include placing a live tree inside the Capitol, a tradition dating to World War Two that former Secretary of State Sharon Priest nixed in 1995 for safety reasons. State foresters were outraged when Priest first replaced the live tree with a silk artificial one. Posted by Mike Hellgren
