EPA Sues Alltel

Updated: January 7, 2009
The federal Environmental Protection Agency today says Alltel would pay a one million dollar fine and carry out anti-pollution audits nationwide under a settlement reached with the EPA. The EPA says the consent decree was filed today at federal court in Little Rock. That`s where the federal government also filed a suit today accusing the company of failing to get required permits and keep required records at 205 facilities in 18 states. The agency says Little Rock-based Alltel agreed to carry out the environmental-compliance audits at more than 75-hundred sites around the nation. The telecommunications company says the complaint and settlement dealt with record keeping and reporting requirements, and that Alltel never allowed the improper release of any material that would harm the environment or the public.
