Two charter schools could be headed to the
Altheimer area.
The Altheimer Unified School District`s board recently gave the
two open-enrollment charters their approval.
Charter schools receive public money but are exempt from some
laws and rules that dictate operation of regular public schools.
Many school boards vote against charter school applications in
their area due to fears of losing students and the money that
follows them, but Altheimer officials say they`re not worried.
The school district approved the Learning Academy for Urban
Leaders, and Arkansas Virtual Academy`s applications.
The charter schools still must be approved by the state Board of
Education, which will consider the charters in January.
