Clark Defends His Candidacy As Democrat During Debate

Retired General Wesley Clark says he is running for president as a Democrat because he realizes that party most closely reflects his beliefs. In a debate in New York Thursday, Clark described himself as pro-choice, pro-affirmative action, pro-environment and "proud to be a Democrat." The Little Rock resident did NOT back down on favorable comments he made about President Bush as late as 2001. Instead, he says Bush has NOT turned out to be the leader he once thought Bush might be. The former NATO commander says Bush recklessly cut taxes and recklessly led the nation into war in Iraq. Clark says he was nonpartisan when he was in the military. But when he realized he needed to speak out against Bush, Clark says, he knew he needed to run as a Democrat.
