Governor Huckabee is expected in the next
few days to reveal proposed legislation consistent with his plan to
overhaul Arkansas public schools.
The governor describes the reform package as combining the best
of all the education reform ideas he has received.
Experts estimate Arkansas must spend 847 (m) million dollars a
year in new education funding to comply with a court order to
improve a public school system it declared unconstitutionally bad.
The state has a January deadline to come up with ways to fix
problems.
Huckabee plans to call legislators to meet in special session
December eighth to consider education reforms and ways to fund
them.
Educators hope the final plan will be one everyone can live
with. Rural districts and their legislative representatives balked
during the regular session on a Huckabee plan that would have
consolidated high schools with less than 15-hundred students if
they cannot economically meet standards.
