Arkansas Tourism Down For First Part Of Summer

By: Import User
Updated: January 7, 2009
Tourism tax revenue was down for the early part of the summer, but state officials are hopeful they will see an increase for the months of July and August. State tourism director Joe David Rice says worries about the military conflict in Iraq, the economy and bad weather reduced the number of visitors in May and June. The state`s two-percent tourism tax collections in May dropped one-point-nine percent from last year, and June was down three-point-one percent from last year. But Rice says the collections for July and August should look better, because July is typically Arkansas` best month for tourism. But an official with the American Automobile Association says July and August could have been better because of reduced anxiety over the war and signs of an earnest economic recovery.
