Ten Commandments Display Changes In Maumelle

A Maumelle judge is modifying a display of the Ten Commandments in his courtroom to include other "historical documents." District Judge David Pake made the changes after conferring with the Rutherford Institute, a Virginia-based conservative civil liberties group. Institute officials say Pake asked for advice in light of the legal battle over a Ten Commandments monument in Alabama. Pake added documents that have influenced Western law, including the Declaration of Independence. The institute says Pake posted the 11-by-14 inch copy of the Ten Commandments in 1994 and received no complaints until August of this year, when the head of the Arkansas chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union -- Rita Sklar -- was quoted in a newspaper story.
