Effort Underway to Improve Literacy

By: Import User
Updated: January 7, 2009
Many of us take our ability to read for granted, but for tens of thousands of Arkansans, the simple task of reading this story is impossible. Experts say one in four Arkansans can`t read above a 5th grade level. Many people slip through the cracks in elementary school and never catch up. The good news? Volunteers are available in almost every community, to help those who can`t read, or help those who want to improve their existing skills. Plans are also underway for the first-ever Arkansas Literary Festival, sponsored by Arkansas Literacy Councils. The two-day event, scheduled for next April, focuses solely on the importance of reading. Story filed by: Lyndall Stout
